How long does it take to master NLP?

The simplest reply to this question is the best – a lifetime! However, the duration that you expect to study (in whatever form) before you can competently serve yourself and your potential clients is another question. Before we answer this, let us look at the various levels in NLP.

NLP Practitioner Certification

On the NLP Practitioner course, you will receive a foundational body of NLP Knowledge. You will be provided with a basic understanding of human behaviour and communication, how to identify behavioural patterns and how to establish rapport.

On the NLP Practitioner course, you will receive a foundational body of NLP Knowledge. You will be provided with a basic understanding of human behaviour and communication, how to identify behavioural patterns and how to establish rapport.

Most providers will also provide a solution to the problem of what to do when you have internal conflict, as well as insights and experiences of some of the foundational NLP change processes. You will learn how to structure your language in more effective ways, so that your words create thoughts within both yourself and others that are supportive of where you or your clients want to go in life. You will also learn the skills that enable well-formed outcomes.

It is important to remember that when you truly want to master the art and science of NLP you will also want to complete your NLP Master Practitioner training so that you have the entire current body of knowledge that is NLP at your disposal.

NLP Master Practitioner Certification

NLP is a constantly evolving body of knowledge; much of the training in the Practitioner will focus on the core skills, practices and processes of NLP. During your Master Practitioner programme you will gain further insights and experiences of NLP knowledge and technique. However, while most practitioner courses cover roughly the same information, the Master Practitioner Course can be a completely different story.

You could attend several different Master Practitioner courses (and we know people who have) and receive copious amounts of new information at each one. This reaffirms the evolutionary nature of NLP as both an art and a science. If NLP were pure science you would learn the same thing at every course. However, because each NLPer has his or her own focus, preference or map of the world, the nature of the content of Master Practitioner can and does change. Because NLP is also an art, trainers will tend to add whatever their preference or flavour to the curriculum. This is fine, as long as they meet the standards required within their certifying body. We feel that a course that moves NLP in different directions, that explores new and exciting forms of change are better, in that they are the engines of NLP’s evolution.

NLP Master Trainer Certification

It has been said that if you want to truly master something, you need to learn how to teach it. Even if your objective is not to become an NLP Trainer and offer certification, the information you receive in this course will last you a lifetime. The content of NLP Trainers Training provides so much more than simply what you learn to train. This course certifies you to teach on both NLP Practitioner and Master Practitioner Courses. In some organisations this is the highest level of NLP development and the holder of an NLP Trainers Training certificate can train up to and including trainers status. Other organisations offer the additional certification of Certified Master Trainer of NLP. Regardless of your starting point, with quality NLP Trainer Training you will walk away with even greater skills in presenting and facilitation, communication and leadership. How to ensure it is one of quality will be discussed later in this paper.

NLP Trainers Training

Should you want to develop your NLP even further, there are a few institutions that offer NLP Master Trainer Certification. Attendance of this programme is more of an apprenticeship than training. Joining this program means that an individual who may be considered as one of the best directly mentors you. However, be aware that certificates and titles are not all. Theoretically, as it is possible to have achieved NLP Master Trainer in two and a half years, an individual may still only have limited experience in delivering NLP.

Having discussed the various levels of NLP training, let us talk about the styles in which these courses are delivered. Basically there are two styles of learning with regard to NLP:

» NLP training spread out over a period of time

» Accelerated NLP learning programme
